This trip we went from Hickam to Charleston where we left for Haiti. Then we got retasked to go to Spain and Iraq and came back through Charleston and Travis. A pretty interesting trip and a lot of fun.
Big plane at Charleston
The Dunlaps (Chris, Amanda, and their son Sam)
Flying over the Bahamas
First views of Haiti (more mountains than I expected)
Populated coast near Port-au-Prince
Port-au-Prince runway
Something burning near the runway
Sunset on the runway
Things were pretty crowded
We're taxiing on the runway, and a C-130 is about to take off
Coming to the terminal... 1Lt Jimmy Arnold on right, Capt Mark Fischer on left
Tents, trucks, helicopters all in the grass between the runway and taxiway
Marshaller parking us only feet from the terminal
People lined up outside, cracks in the building from the earthquake
Closeup of the cracks
Me on left, Mark running checklists
Cracks inside the terminal, too
Things were busy through the night
People were loading in jets in crowds
The ramp at Charleston (I counted over 30 C-17's several times)
Sunrise over the Atlantic on the way to Spain
More sunrise
Two layers of clouds split the sun
Here we are in the middle of the ocean
The coast of Portugal
In town in Rota, Spain
Monument outside base in Rota
I had a Spanish beer (it was a Cruzcrumpo) with my Paella the first night
Snowy mountains in Turkey
More Turkish mountains
Cool valley with a river/lake in Turkey
Jimmy hanging out
More Turkish mountains
Traffic was pretty heavy over there... this one is 1000 ft above us
We're over Turkey, Syria is in the distance
The Euphrates... about 200 yards away is completely desolate, then green and civilization just pop up out of nowhere
My room at the Hotel Duque de Najera in downtown Rota, Spain
Two blocks from the hotel
The roads were extremely narrow... we drove through this one-car-wide archway just a few minutes before
The Irish pub where we started the night
View from my window
From the balcony
Balcony again
At the edge of town, by the beach
Mark on the left, Jimmy on the right
We couldn't figure out what these chairs were for, but Jimmy tested the pedals and they worked...
From the pier
Sign by the docks
Next to the last sign
I couldn't believe how many sailboats there were
Cool lighthouse
The lighthouse in the background (that Irish pub is to my immediate left)
The building to the left is my hotel, the ocean is through the arch at the end
A cathedral across the street from my hotel
From my balcony again
The Rockies
Rockies through the HUD
There is a road on the plateau that goes down the side and then disappears into the clouds
Got to hang out with Chris McGarvey while we were in Travis
